The Squeal Game
School counselor Erica Rock shares this classroom lesson she uses with primary students.
“First, I read your book, Don't Squeal Unless it's a Big Deal, then do a game based off the TV show, “Deal or No Deal” called “Squeal or No Squeal.” I created a game board with pigs holding each pocket (instead of women in pretty dresses holding suitcases). Inside each pocket is a situation, and the kids have to decide whether the situation is one where you would “squeal” or “not squeal.” Erica tailors the situations to fit the teachers’ needs. According to Erica, “I have found this game to be very successful with 1st graders, and it ties in perfectly to the book. It's a fun way to teach a lesson we've been trying to teach for years!”
Thanks for sharing your idea, Erica. Coming up with new ways to address common issues, whether in the classroom or in the counselor’s office, can be a challenge. When counselors exchange ideas, it helps everyone – including the most important people of all, the kids.
